Good read. I was surprised by Shatner’s assessment of space. It seemed sad but the darkness is lonely if you have no way to surpass it.

There’s a song called “Moonloop” by Porcupine Tree that has the moon landing audio in it. That was the first space audio I’d heard and this is the second. 🙂

I didn't previously know Moonlope but just listened to it - it has that Pink Floyd-vibe I love and when I hear that Apollo mission audio, it gave me goosebumps. :) Thanks for sharing it Chevanne!

It's indeed sad to learn what emotions that suborbital spaceflight gave to Shatner.

I believe that by constantly observing and exploring outer space - especially with such objects as the James Webb Space Telescope - enables us to look beyond the sad darkness to see beauty in the universe.

And the optimal state of space exploration is to balance the two perspectives - one towards protecting our only Earth and another one for the desire to explore further in our universe.

I see so many dystopian stories where we’ve made one choice! It’s a good perspective because we have this planet here and now, even if there is another, it’s beyond our reach. It’s absolutely essential to protect our home world since we don’t know if we’ll get another.

Fully agree! And this is why we, everyday people, need to widen our perspectives, just as the Overview Effect impacts space travelers - of course, for us, it's much more difficult as we don't have the first-hand experience seeing Earth from outer space.

But that's why I love some astronauts' advocate work to protect our planet. Ron Garan is a great example and there is a quite recent video with him on this topic:
